Inner Sanctuary Box: A Therapeutic Creation for Coping and Self-Care

FREE ART THERAPY DIRECTIVE BELOW

The Personalized Inner Sanctuary Box project is designed to guide you in creating a small, personalized box using a variety of art materials. This tangible, visual representation serves as a physical reminder of coping mechanisms and positive elements, promoting self-care and offering a tangible tool for moments of stress or burnout. Using felt, construction paper, scissors, sharpies, colored pencils, drawing paper, and Elmer's glue, along with an empty small, shallow box, this activity encourages you to reflect on your sources of strength, relaxation, and well-being. Additionally, there is an option to include their previous creation of the wax sculpture in the box.

Materials Needed:

  • Small box

    • I used an empty matchbox

  • Assorted felt

  • Assorted paper

  • Scissors

  • Glue

  • Markers/writing utensils

  • Magazine cutouts

  • Personal item* (written affirmations, shell, stone, charm)

  • Wax Sculpture*

    • Read about utilizing wax as a medium for sculpture and fidgeting in the previous article.

*optional items you can add

Instructions:

  1. Decorate with felt: Use glue to adhere the felt, creating a soft and visually appealing surface.

  2. Express with paper: Cut shapes or patterns using colors and shapes that evoke feelings of calmness and positivity.

  3. Symbolic drawings: Create symbolic drawings representing your sources of strength and relaxation.

  4. Reflect on the significance: As you create each symbolic item, take a moment to reflect on the significance of promoting your well-being.

    1. How does each element contribute to your self-care routine and resilience in the face of stress?

  5. Arrange the inside of the box: Place your drawings inside your box along with any items that hold personal meaning such as a written affirmation.

  6. Secure with glue: Use glue to secure the drawings and items inside the box.

  7. Embellishments & wax sculpture: If you create a wax sculpture in the previous activity, consider placing this inside your box. Add any decorative elements to enhance the overall aesthetic.

  8. Reflect: How did this tangible representation of your sources of strength serve as a tool for self-care?

The Personalized Inner Sanctuary Box is a therapeutic and creative activity that encourages you to reflect on and visually represent their coping mechanisms and positive elements. This tangible reminder can be a valuable resource for moments of stress or burnout, serving as a personal sanctuary and promoting overall well-being. The option to include a previous wax sculpture adds a layer of continuity and personal history to the creation.
