Exploring Emotions and Memories Through Art Therapy and Travel Souvenirs

Blue Horizons, Mixed Media, by Molly Michaels, Summer 2019

Hello there, my lovely readers! Today, I want to talk about one of my favorite tools as an art therapist - collages! Collages are such a versatile and fun way to express ourselves creatively while also exploring our emotions and inner selves. In this post, I'm going to share with you some of the benefits of collage work in art therapy, and also share some personal tips and tricks for creating collages using pieces from my travels.

First and foremost, collages are an incredibly flexible medium that can be adapted to fit almost any client's needs. They can be abstract or realistic, colorful or monochromatic, and can incorporate a variety of materials including paper, fabric, and found objects. This flexibility makes them a great choice for clients who may not feel comfortable with other forms of artistic expression.

Additionally, collage work is a great way to tap into our subconscious minds and explore our inner worlds. By selecting images and materials that resonate with us on a deep level, we can gain insight into our emotions, beliefs, and values. In art therapy, collages can be used to explore a wide range of issues, including trauma, self-esteem, and relationships.

Now, let's talk about using pieces from our travels in collage work. As an avid traveler myself, I love incorporating postcards, ticket stubs, and other travel memorabilia into my collages. Not only does this give the finished piece a unique and personal touch, but it also allows me to reflect on my experiences and memories in a creative way.

When creating a travel-inspired collage, I like to start by selecting a few key pieces that represent my trip, such as a postcard from a favorite landmark or a ticket stub from a memorable event. I then build the collage around these pieces, using complementary colors and textures to create a cohesive composition.

In conclusion, collages are an incredibly powerful tool in art therapy, and incorporating pieces from our travels can make them even more meaningful and personal. So go ahead, dig through your old travel souvenirs, and create a beautiful and reflective collage today!
